\Rezekne Special Economic Zone Authority offers to take a look back at some of last year’s key events and top achievements.
"FDI Magazine" expert recognition
In October 2019, Rezekne Special Economic Zone (Rezekne SEZ) was mentioned among the best in three categories: Expansions, Talent Pool, and Incentives in a survey on the world's most perspective economic zones, conducted by the “fDi Magazine”, a special edition of the British newspaper “Financial Times”. The recognition of experts of the “fDi Magazine” is an important assessment of the activities of Rezekne SEZ.
International cooperation with the World Free Zone Organization
Rezekne SEZ Authority attended World Free Zones Organisation (World FZO) Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE) in Barcelona, Spain in June 2019. The World FZO is the largest and strongest organization bringing together free zones from all over the world. In addition, the organisation has established 17 national contact points (NCP) last year and Rezekne SEZ CEO Sandra Ežmale represents the World FZO National Contact Point in Latvia. The NCP are appointed to promote the exchange of information between the World FZO and the ecosystem of free zones in the country.
Experience exchange in degraded area development planning
A number of activities were carried out within the Latvian-Lithuanian cross-border project LLI-386 “TRANS-FORM” during last year. Four municipalities are involved in the project and Rezekne SEZ Authority is one of the project partners. Project representatives participated in theoretical and practical trainings on sustainable urban and territory planning and models for degraded area transformation, and organized study trips about the latest trends in revitalisation of urban areas to project partner territories in Latvia, Lithuania and other locations in Europe – Germany and the Netherlands. Rezekne SEZ Authority developed a revitalization concept within the project framework for the degraded area in Rezekne Special Economic Zone territory at Komunāla Street 13 and 11C.
Improvement of industrial areas in Rezekne SEZ territory
At the end of the year 2019, land improvement works were started at Komunāla Street 13 and 11C in Rezekne on the basis of the revitalization concept developed in the framework of the Latvian-Lithuanian cross-border project LLI-386 “TRANS-FORM”. With the support of Rezekne SEZ entrepreneurship support fund, the Rezekne SEZ Authority started the relief organization and leveling works, demolishing of existing buildings and tree felling, in order to enable investors to use this land plot for the construction of new production buildings. The works are scheduled to be completed in February, 2020.

In 2019, Rezekne SEZ Authority carried out a series of activities to attract investments in the territory of Rezekne SEZ. Meetings and presentations were organised for different audiences about the investment objects in the territory of Rezekne SEZ, including the production complex on Viļakas Street 1, the production - office building on the Atbrivosanas Alley 155A, k-1, and land plots equipped with technical infrastructure.
In August 2019, the company “MEGASTEEL” acquired the lease rights to the 1st floor of the production - office building at Atbrivosanas Alley 155A, k-1, as well as with the active work of Rezekne SEZ Authority and the successful cooperation with the Latvian Investment and Development Agency a tenant (company “Ecopharm Europe”) was also attracted to the 2nd and 3rd floors (1123, 5 m2 total area) of the building.
Rezekne SEZ support
In 2019, Rēzekne SEZ Commercial Company status has been granted to MEGASTEEL Ltd. RSEZ, which plans to establish a powder coating line for large-scale metal parts and structures, creating at least 20 new jobs and making long-term investments in technological equipment in the amount of 713,000 euros.
Furthermore, 3 agreements for implementation of new investment projects have been signed last year, with the total investments in the amount of 1 563 000 euros.
In addition, at the end of 2019 Rezekne SEZ Authority has started to work with 2 potential commercial companies for granting the status of Rezekne SEZ.
